Railways
Downtime in the railway industry is both costly and disruptive.
CoMech are experienced in calibrating all the safety critical assets that the rail industry uses to keep operational and safe running the trains, servicing the network and manufacturing specifically for the sector. We are the UK stockist of MiniProf which is precision equipment widely used in the rail sector.
- UKAS Accredited Calibration (ISO/IEC 17025)
-
CoMech provide a range of calibration services either at our strategically located UKAS laboratories or onsite at depots for the rail sector.
- UKAS calibration for operational reliability and regulatory compliance

With the UK rail industry being heavily regulated with compliance to RIS-1701-PLT, Network Rail standards, and international norms (like ISO/IEC 17025) you require traceable, calibrated equipment. Put simply calibration is not just best practice it’s a contractual and legal obligation in most rail operations today.
Torque calibration
Torque wrenches are essential tools in the rail sector, used extensively for tightening fasteners to precise specifications across a wide range of critical applications. Whether securing rail clips, assembling bogie components, maintaining brake systems, or fitting overhead line infrastructure, applying the correct torque is vital to ensure both mechanical integrity and operational safety.
Because of the safety critical nature of these tasks, torque wrenches must be calibrated regularly to ensure they provide accurate and consistent readings. Over time and through repeated use, all torque tools can drift from their original settings due to mechanical wear, environmental conditions, or accidental misuse. This deviation can lead to incorrect torque application, even if the operator is following correct procedures.
UKAS pressure calibration
Pressure gauges and sensors play a critical role in both the operation and maintenance of key rail systems. From braking systems to air suspension, HVAC units, and hydraulic actuators, accurate pressure monitoring ensures safe, reliable, and efficient performance across multiple components of rolling stock and infrastructure.
When pressure readings drift or become inaccurate due to age, wear, or environmental exposure, it can result in unsafe operating conditions, inefficient system performance, or false diagnostics during maintenance. In worst case scenarios, incorrect pressure readings can compromise braking performance or vehicle stability, posing serious safety risks. UKAS calibration is essential for the pressure gauges and sensor used in the rail sector.
Electrical UKAS calibration
Electrical testing and measurement equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and functionality of rolling stock, infrastructure, and signalling systems.
Over time, electrical testing devices can drift from their original accuracy, leading to incorrect readings that could compromise railway operations or safety critical maintenance tasks. Regular UKAS accredited calibration ensures all equipment remains within specified tolerances, providing traceability to national standards.
Temperature and environmental sensor calibration
In the rail sector, environmental and temperature monitoring is critical to the safe and efficient operation of rolling stock, infrastructure, and support facilities.
Over time, the accuracy of temperature sensors, data loggers, and environmental monitoring devices can degrade due to exposure to harsh conditions, mechanical wear, or electrical drift. That’s why regular UKAS calibration is essential; to ensure the information these devices provide remains precise, reliable, and traceable to national standards.
