HAV Assessment FAQs

Answering the most commonly asked HAV Assessment questions

  • What is HAVS and HAVS Assessments?

HAVS is Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome this can cause numbness, tingling and damage in your hands/fingers, making it much harder to complete day to day tasks. The symptoms are potentially permanent and life affecting.  HAVS assessment measures the vibration output of each tool so the safe working vibration limits can be calculated, preventing over exposure and minimising the risk of your employees developing HAVS.

  • How does the process work?

To request a HAV assessment of your tools, please provide us with an asset list and we will send you a quotation. Then simply send us a purchase order and we will schedule a visit to your site. During the visit, our experts will measure and calculate the vibration limits of your tools and apply appropriate tags.

  • What do the tags mean?

The tags are a colour coding system (Red, Yellow and Green) to visually indicate the severity of vibration output of each tool Red being the most severe and Green the least. The tags also contain further details such as the EAV, ELV and date of test.

  • What is EAV and ELV?

EAV is the Exposure Action Value. This is the exposure time limit after which accurate monitoring needs to occur. ELV is the Exposure Limit Value. This is the exposure time limit which should never be reached.

  • How can I prevent HAVS?

At present, there is no Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available that can fully protect workers from Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). As such, the most effective means of protection is through prevention. This involves accurately measuring the vibration levels of each tool and monitoring worker exposure in accordance with the Exposure Action Value (EAV) and Exposure Limit Value (ELV). It is crucial to bear in mind that exposure levels are cumulative and can be further amplified by frequently transitioning between different tools.

  • How often should I get my tools tested?

The recommended frequency of HAV tool testing and assessment varies depending on the specific circumstances and the type of tools in use. However, it is generally advised to conduct regular assessments and testing, we recommend this to be on an annual basis or whenever any significant changes are made to the tools or work processes.
