CoMech to Take Over UK and Ireland MiniProf Sales, Calibration and Maintenance

We are delighted to announce that from January 2019, we will be taking over as the sole UK and Ireland agent for the sales, calibration and maintenance of the ground-breaking MiniProf instruments.

Productive talks with Denmark-based Greenwood Engineering and current UK agent Bakerail have enabled us to secure this amazing opportunity. Greenwood are the world retailers, calibrators and designers of MiniProf.

What are the MiniProf units?

Patented since 1992 by Greenwood, they are easy-to-use instruments for measuring cross-section profiles of various types of rail, brake and wheel profiles. They are magnetically attached to the top of a railhead and use the opposite rail as a reference point through a telescopic rod. A perpendicular device is then mounted onto the rod to guarantee a correct alignment with the rail. This therefore provides a superior profile and shorter exposure. The MiniProfs are built from lightweight titanium, which makes them resilient to water and shocks with a temperature range of -15°C to +35°C.

The MiniProf rail instruments are becoming recognised on a global scale. With over 2,500 users in over 50 countries, they have already set the standard for measuring carriage wheels and rails.

There are seven types of MiniProf units we will be providing to the rail industry within the UK and Ireland. These include:

  • MiniProf Rail, primarily used to measure cross-sectional rail profiles to determine wear on many types of rail, including grooved rails. In one single swoop, this unit measures rail profile and track gauge in less than five seconds. Accuracy is better than ±11µm with a repeatability of ±2.5 µm.


  • MiniProf Wheel, which is suitable for measuring cross-sectional wheel profiles to clarify and analyse wheel wear for various types of wheels. It effortlessly calculates the diameter in less than five seconds, meaning a complete railroad car can be measured in less than five minutes. Accuracy is better than ±9µm with a repeatability of ±2.5µm.


  • MiniProf Lightrail Wheel. This is a small and lightweight instrument which has been specifically designed for using on tramway vehicles. Simple to mount in very narrow places and fits all tram wheels. Accuracy is better than ±9µm with a repeatability of ±2.5µm.


  • MiniProf Wheel 400, which comes supplied with an extended backplate measuring 400mm. Compared to the standard MiniProf Wheel, the accuracy remains the same, while diameter readings are increased significantly. Accuracy is better than ±9µm with a repeatability of ±2.5µm.


  • MiniProf Brake, which provides calculations of wear parameters, hollowing and thickness of any brake disc. The brake instrument is attached magnetically to the vertical part of the wheel to be used as a reference point. The MiniProf Brake can also be axle-mounted on the outer diameter of the brake disc with magnetic rollers. Accuracy is better than ±11µm with a repeatability of ±2.5 µm.


  • MiniProf TwinHead, for measuring left and right rail profiles simultaneously. It supports all standard wear calculations for rails and wheels. Accuracy is better than ±11µm with a repeatability of ±2.5µm.


  • MiniProf Switch & Crossings. Currently in development, it is capable of measuring several profiles on switches and crossings by extending a fixed rod to the opposite rail for stability. Accuracy is better than ±11µm with a repeatability of ±2.5µm.

All instruments within the MiniProf group have a full-contact point, which easily cuts through layers of dirt, oil, frost, leaves and sand for working in many types of environment. Extremely accurate measurements are possible, thanks to the magnetic measuring wheel and two high-resolution rotating optical encoders. 

Bluetooth connectivity is enabled on all the MiniProf units for seamless wireless measurement capabilities within virtually any operating environment. Up to an impressive 20-30.000 individual points are taken in one single measurement swoop in less than five seconds. Data is stored within all the units and can be analysed with the Envision software at a later date.

All MiniProf items are supplied with a full Envision package, which has been utilised for using with Android smartphones, tablets and computers. Simple data can be gathered wirelessly and can then be given an in-depth analysis on a personal computer.
